150 years ago, the city of Rafcate was attacked and nearly obliterated. The few hundred survivors were tasked with the responsibility of rebuilding the city... and making sure this never happened again. In order to do so, they agreed to some very strict rules. The first was that every witch, werewolf, mage, fairy, demon and berserker would be drafted into military service at the age of sixteen--the Defenders.
Laurie Casek turned sixteen just last month, but she's been dreaming of being a Defender for most of her life. Sure, she doesn't get along perfectly with all her teammates (or her surly teacher), and, sure, sometimes her spells don't exactly work the way she wants them to (or at all), but she loves it anyway. She's happy for maybe the first time ever. That is, until a dead teenage girl shows up on their doorstep carrying a message about treason and revolution that threatens to shatter the fragile bond between Laurie and her teammates forever.
